Brad Johnson To Play Despite Three Fingers Broken

October 14, 2008 by admin

DALLAS- On Monday Tony Romo was reported out for four weeks due to an injured pinkie finger causing the Dallas Cowboys to give Brad Johnson the call despite him having three fingers broken, including his pinkie.  Johnson was injured by Romo himself in a locker room ‘brawl’ one week earlier.

“Tony broke three of my fingers last week, saying to me ‘Old man you will never play on this team as long as I’m on it’. Then he proceeded to bend my middle finger, ring finger, and pinkie back until they broke. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, knowing I would never start. Now, I’m wondering whether I should have let him do that,” the veteran quarterback said.

Cowboys officials say Romo knicked his pinkie, not during the game, but in after game celebrations when he uncorked a bottle of champagne. The cork flew off the bottle bounced into Romo’s cheek, and then dinged his right finger.

“It hurt like the dickens,” Romo said. “I mean it’s no joke when corks fly off champagne bottles that fast. It skidded past my finger, and I think it’s broken.  What all this injury means is that I’m going to have to take a long vacation, and think about everything. I’m reevaluating my entire career.”

Don Remington, Cowboys trainer said, “Tony should have never had the bottle in his hand in the first place. We generally don’t celebrate our wins in the locker room with booze. And we definitely don’t celebrate losses at all. Trying to gurgle the bubbly after a heartbreaking loss is bad for team morale, and just completely inappropriate on every level.  We wish Tony hadn’t done that, and hope he apologizes.”

Johnson says he is glad to be handed the job for the next four weeks, and will do his best not to let his team down.

“However, Johnson said, “I make no claims on what will happen. My fingers are broken, and I’m feeling awfully middle-aged. Let’s just hope for the best. I apologize to my receivers ahead of time.  I wish I hadn’t let Tony break my fingers.  That was a big mistake.”

Romo says he will recover in Mexico with unspecified friends.
